Animagic 2012 – Shoji Sato Interview

High School of the Dead

It looks like High School of the Dead is going to be on hiatus for a while because Shoji Sato is working on his manga, Triage X. Even so, he said he is also working on the next High School of the Dead manga chapters, as well as researching what new weapons, vehicles, and other mechanics to include in the series. He stated that he wanted to have the same detailed and quality work that he’s had so far, so it will take him some time and asks the fans to be patient.

Another question that was posed to Sato was if all the main characters would survive to the end. He replied that he wasn’t certain if any main characters would die or not, and even though said he hoped the whole group would survive, he also did like the idea of it being asked.

Someone else also asked him if Koichi Shido will cause more trouble, or die soon, in the upcoming chapters. Sato said that he couldn’t answer this question, but he did hope he dies soon because he doesn’t like the character. High School of the Dead Season 2

Lastly, someone asked him when he began illustrating mangas as a career path. Sato replied that he became very ill when he was young, so he couldn’t attend regular classes like everyone else and had to stay at home a lot, so he would spend his time drawing instead.

And finally, Sato said that he really liked the character Takashi Komuro because he is well liked by many, but his all time favorite character is Kohta Hirano.

Actually the publishers of this anime went to great lengths to ensure it’s authenticity and believability. The voices are properly dramatized, the script is adapted for American culture (as seen in episode 8 where a Sarah Palin joke is made), and the voices fit the character. There is very little culture shock in dialogue and, most importantly, it’s understandable. Overall, it really is one of the best dubs I’ve ever seen and would strongly encourage you to begin the second season in your native tongue πŸ™‚

    • FAllen says:

The Dub is pretty good actually, i was surprised they dubbed it to where the voice went with the anime, which i didnt expect considering in most movies subbed and turned to dubb, it looks like shit. but comparing the 2, the Sub has more feeling and explains certain stuff not in the dubb, its acceptable but i prefer sub. Watching Season 2 for sub would be best for me, but then again, save the best for last.
But id prefer to watch the awesome series of Season 2 instead of waiting for like half a year before dub comes out, cause they still need to release.

The Anime and Manga arent all that different from each other, but of course, after watching HOTD of the Anime so many times, i know the scenes well, reading the manga is pretty good, for starters they show every in the shower , if you know what i mean ;D. Theres also some scenes not included but thats fine, its still similar. Love em both, i need to get back in reading, but mostly, watch the Subbed version of the anime.

Given the published ages of the characters makes them minors in most countries, its not surprising only the adult in the group had any exposed nipples in the Anime.

It is interesting reading the manga after seeing the Anime. As much as it feels the same, there were some interesting differences. I would love to hear from the Madhouse director as to why those changes were made. I suspect it was so the story flowed more smoothly. Some differences I noticed were:

In Act 6 ‘ In the Dead of the night’ the girls are a bit more exposed, as FAllen points out. Also we see that Rei and Shizuka get drunk, explains why they act so promiscuous towards Takashi in the anime.

In Act 9 ‘The Dead way Home’ When the group’s Humvee gets trapped against the fence, the manga and amine take different directions. In the manga Saeko and Takashi are able to get through the fence with the rest of the group. With Takashi helping Rei through. In the anime Takashi and Saeko split from the group and find the 6-wheel ATV in a shop. The humvee shows up later in the anime but never again in the manga.

Act 13 ‘Guns n’ Dead’ is missing from the anime, which is about Rika and her partner. You shouldn’t miss this.

In Act 14 ‘Dead storm rising’. In the manga the group leaves the Takagi compound in the 6-wheel all-terrain assault buggy, which is the first time we see it in the manga. In the anime, its the recovered Humvee they leave in. In the manga the Humvee was apparently never recovered from the fence back in Act 9.

In the manga its not until Act 16 ‘The girl next dead’ that Takashi and Saeko take the ATV on their own, in an effort to lure the zombies away from the rest of the group, who are now on foot. Act 17 then follows the two of them on their own, much like the Anime did earlier in the story. With the group getting back together right at the end.

I can only speak for the US dubbed blu-ray, but I personally enjoyed the english voice actors, feel they did a really good job. I don’t understand Japanese yet and would rather watch the anime then read it. Although there is a lot more swearing in the english dub than the Japanese version, at least according to the subtitles. The english version does have my favorite line in the whole series so far. When Shizuka blows Hirano’s mind with a kiss and he cant think straight “I like turtles”

      • FAllen says:

Haha u sure right about the Turtles part xD that was hilarious, cause in anime and i believe manga he didnt say anything but sounds lol. So yeah dubbed is actually acceptable and pretty good for some parts making it more funnier and enjoyable. Just some scenes are suppose to be really serious and deep meaning but instead they add humor or something to piss each other off. Like the scene Episode 8 when Takagi gets out of the humvee to help the others out, Takashi calls her by her last name and i believe she says call her by her first name. Same with episode 10 when Takagi ran out on her mom pissed.
So of course everything will have their flaws, but i really seriously need to buy the dvd to where it shows both English and Japanese dub while having the original Subbed version as well. Id watch HOTD every night as my new zombie movie.

But i need to get back on the manga, its really interesting, but ive been too caught up with Hagure Yuusha and Kaichou wa maid-sama. And reading the manga for Fairy Tail and rewatching the episodes to compare them both.
In conclusion.. I CANT WAIT FOR SEASON 2! πŸ˜€ the more i watch HOTD the more i crave that feeling of a season 2 , wondering how it will go and seeing the characters again <3

  6. Roddy says:

anime is ok prefer the manga cuz they usually butcher the anime

    • NotThisTime says:

In this case the anime follows the manga fairly well. Of course there are some changes but it is basically the same. Only big change was the omission of act 13. And that could be inserted into season 2 of the anime.

  7. noname says:

I’m more curious with the progress of the manga buuuuuut
    I can’t deny the fact a Season 2 would be awesome >_<
    Can't wait for it

  8. o it’s so amezing season222222222222222

  9. wild bill says:

SEASON 2 need it so bad, this show is great and can be even better with more added. please HURRY! kick butt zomby anime with some romance. WANT MORE.

  10. ThatOneKid says:

You must keep the same characters! It won’t work any other way! And you can’t kill them either! That would… Well, frankly, suck… And Shido is a good character for being the antagonist… But either way, I hate him too xD leave him to his misery when he dies die..
